Doux Cafe

Doux Cafe is a newly opened (February 2016) cafe in Houston. It is spacious, clean and neatly decorated. Doux Cafe is a to-go cafe for chocolate lovers, and for people who love crepes and waffles. I was greedy on my first visit because I ordered a brownie crepe and a waffle all for myself. I was alone in the cafe on a weekday late morning and I thoroughly enjoyed the quietness while I dug into my sweet treats.

The brownie crepe was awesome. I am not a big fan of brownie but the brownie tasted good with it being stuffed inside the crepe, and the crepe was coated with white chocolate, milk chocolate, and dark chocolate. I finished the crepe fast and furious!

The triple chocolate waffle was fantastic too! However, after a few bites, I tasted sour flour in the waffle. The manager’s timing could not be more than perfect. He asked how was my waffle and I gave him my feedback that it tasted sour. He was shocked and insisted that I should stop eating it. He snatched the plate away from me and threw it into the garbage bin despite my assurance to him that I was totally fine with it. He then made a new waffle for me and added a scoop of ice cream (additional scoop of ice cream costs $1.99) as a complimentary dish. The manager told me that their food is made fresh everyday and the sourness comes from a spray, which was used on the waffle machine. I was very grateful that he provided such good service. Many thumbs up!

My complimentary triple chocolate waffle with a scoop of Dreyer’s vanilla ice cream. No more sour taste!

I would definitely go back to Doux Cafe again and again and again to get my chocolate fix!

Oui Desserts (Pastries)

I had previously posted on Oui Desserts on their macarons. On that same trip, I also shared a plate of traditional beignets with my friend. The beignets were deeply fried (visible burnt marks) and they were served with sweet vanilla bean cream (which was unusual). The beignets were not too bad but in my opinion, they were not as good as the ones I tried at Crescent City Beignets. However, the vanilla bean cream was fragrant and tasted good with the beignets (sugar overloaded!).

I also bought a Napoleon or commonly known as mille-feuille for myself. The mille-feuille was so so good! The pastry is flaky and the custard is sweet and smooth. Though it is a little pricey but it is worth it because of the good quality.

These pastries are definitely great for afternoon high tea!

Oui Desserts

My friend and I were looking for a central cafe for high tea. We decided on Oui Desserts after reading the good reviews on Yelp. The cafe is spacious, clean, and inviting. The menu is written on a chalkboard hanging on the wall. The available pastries are neatly displayed in the covered shelf, and various cookies are contained in cookie jars. My eyes were naturally drawn to the beautifully colored macarons.

There are 13 different macaron flavors. Each macaron are sold at a different price. This concept is new to me because the cafes which I have been so far, sell their macarons at a standard price. The macarons’ price varies from $1.50 to $.175. However, Oui Desserts has a special promotion. Buy a dozen for $1 each! So I decided to get 12 macarons! This is by far the cheapest price I paid for macarons!

The macarons are petite and have bubbly surface on the cookies. I wonder why… The flavors I bought were pistachio, hazelnut, strawberry, blueberry, rose, lemon, lavender, chai, raspberry, chocolate, salted caramel, and vanilla. The only flavor I did not get was the mint chocolate as I am not a big fan of mint chocolate. The macarons are wonderful! The flavors are really good and the cookies are so crunchy. My favorite is the pistachio flavored macaron. I can’t get enough of Oui Desserts’ macarons!

Tous Les Jours

I was at H Mart shopping for my groceries when I saw a petite bakery called Tous Les Jours. The bakery sells many delicious looking breads. But what caught my eyes were the beautiful cakes and macarons! The cakes looked so creamy (not the type of cakes I like) and definitely looked appetizing. Unfortunately the bakery does not sell small slices of cakes like Tiramisu, Chocolate Cake, etc. So my eyes turned to the colorful macarons. Three new flavors were introduced to the macarons family this year. I got two of the new flavors – Black Sesame and Chai. I also bought three other flavors: Salted Caramel, Red Velvet, and Apple Pie. The macarons look so pretty, just like the picture! However, the price of each macaron is quite expensive.

Though the macaron is expensive, the taste makes up for the worth! The fillings are fantastic! The cookie is also very crispy and crunchy. Overall, the quality of the macarons is worth every penny I spent.

Homemade Salted Caramel

I love salted caramel. My favorite pairing is ice cream with salted caramel. The sweetness from the ice cream will be balanced with the salted caramel. I have been buying Ben’s & Jerry ice cream with salted caramel. It is so good! But recently I am in love with vanilla bean ice cream. Thus I decided to make my own salted caramel.

Making this requires a lot of patience especially the initial stage of caramelizing the sugar. Throughout the whole process of making the salted caramel, it was non-stop stirring. My hands got tired from the stirring but I was full of anticipation for my end product. I was very careful not to burn the sugar and always maintain medium heat.

After 30mins of non-stop stirring, finally my homemade salted caramel is done. I tasted it and my immediate thought was “PERFECT!!!” I will be having my homemade salted caramel with vanilla bean ice cream after dinner. I can’t wait!!!

Dessert Gallery Bakery & Cafe

I chanced upon Dessert Gallery Bakery & Cafe when I was having dinner at Kata Robata. The cafe looks so pretty inside and it is so clean. The cafe sells beautiful cakes and the cakes look delicious. The cakes and cookies are gorgeously displayed. I was so tempted to buy a single slice of every cake! But I got to control this craziness!

Deciding what to buy from the cafe was so difficult. At last I settled for a red velvet cookie with white chocolate dip, and three macarons. I chose the caramel, vanilla bean, and cookies ‘n cream macarons.

The red velvet cookie was wonderful! It was not too sweet and every bite was just plain happiness. Great combination of red velvet and chocolate! The macarons were equally exceptional. They were all sized equally, and the fillings were delicious. I could taste the distinct flavor of each macaron. They were not too sweet and I could not get enough of them! The macarons were not as expensive as the ones I bought from other cafes, and this made the macarons so much worth eating again and again and again.

I would unquestionably go back for more macarons and I would want to buy some slices of cakes too!

Three Brothers Bakery

If you stay in Houston and have not heard about Three Brothers Bakery, you are missing out a lot! Three Brothers Bakery won many awards and the bakery has been around for a very long time. They have a wide array of cakes, and they do make customized cakes for special occasions. They have various cupcakes and cookies too. I was overwhelmed by the selections and I took quite some time to decide what I want. I chose a snickerdoodle cheesecake, which is a cheesecake coated with cinnamon, and cookie pieces in the cheesecake. I also bought a peanut butter cookie, marble cookie, and the lady finger cookie. They were so delicious that even my dog cannot resist them!

The snickerdoodle cheesecake was really good! It wasn’t too cheesy and the cinnamon and cookie pieces work well together. The cookies were delicious too! I specially love the peanut butter cookie. The peanut butter in the cookie wasn’t overpowering and the cookie wasn’t too sweet. It was just perfect.

If you would like to enjoy a slice of cake or two, the bakery is spacious enough to have you and your friends to hang around!

I would go back for more cakes and cookies!
